GENERAL DRAFTING
Prerequisite: None
General Drafting introduces the student to the basic concepts of drafting. Its function is not to make draftsman out of the students, but rather to give them a thorough understanding of what drafting is, how industry utilizes drafting and the place of drafting in our highly technical, industrial society. It will give the students basic fundamentals in drafting that will allow them to prepare working drawings and sketches, interpret industrial prints, and adequately plan a shop or industrial drawing.
CAD (COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING)
Prerequisite: General Drafting. Must be sophomore status or above.
This course introduces the student to the basic concepts of CAD drafting and design. The purpose of this program is to further educate a student in drafting. The basic building blocks of drafting are reviewed and applied to computer aided design projects. The CAD program is built around two (2) nine-week sections: the first section is devoted to 2 dimensional drafting. The second section introduces the student to 3 dimensional and solid modeling techniques.
Two main software packages are used in CAD drafting. The first package is AutoCAD utilizing both its 2 dimensional capabilities and its solids package. The second software package explored is Rhinoceros. The “Rhino” software is used for its modeling package only.
Before entering the CAD program, a student must have taken and successfully passed General Drafting with a “C” or better grade point. The class is an Internet based curriculum. The students spend 60% of their time at the computer applying the skills to assigned projects at a self-paced schedule.
Mechanical Design I
Prerequisites: General Drafting & CAD. It is recommended that Manufacturing Technology has also been successfully completed.
The mechanical design program at West Iron County High School is intended for the student interested in a career in the engineering fields. The mechanical design program will cover the following topics:
1. Product design and detailing
2. Manufacturing processes
3. Computer aided machining and manufacturing
4. Materials and processes of manufacturing
The main software package used during this course will be Pro Engineer. Before entering the mechanical design program a student must successfully complete both General Drafting and CAD. It is recommended that Manufacturing Technology has also been successfully completed. Upon completion of Mechanical Design I, a student may enroll into Mechanical Design II with the instructor’s permission.
ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING
Prerequisite: General Drafting & CAD
The Architectural Drafting program is a computer drafting based program introducing students to the field of architecture and construction based occupations. The course emphasizes the planning of a residential structure starting with a "needs" list to a detailed set of drawings. Students will be utilizing AutoDesk Architectural Desktop as the main software package to complete assignments. The architectural program is an Internet based program allowing students to obtain and complete class projects outside of class.
Mechanical Design II
Prerequisites: Mechanical Design I
The Mechanical Design II program at West Iron County High School is intended for the student interested in a career in the engineering fields. Mechanical Design II is a continuation of Mechanical Design I with a more in-depth look at the topics discussed. The main software package used during this course will be Pro Engineer.
1. Product design and detailing
2. Manufacturing processes
3. Computer aided machining and manufacturing
4. Materials and processes of manufacturing
