The Board of Education of the West Iron County Public Schools is pleased to announce the establishment of a cooperative relationship with the Baraga Telephone Company to bring local Internet access to Iron County. This effort will make it possible for a resident of Iron County to connect through a local telephone call to the World Wide Web. It will allow the downloading of software and other files directly to local online computers. It will allow Iron County residents to exchange messages with people at universities, companies and other online services. It will allow instant mail service to other online family and friends no matter where in the world they are.
West Iron County Public Schools are currently offering Internet accounts for sale to residents and businesses in Iron County. Proceeds from the sale of these accounts will make local access to the Internet in Iron County a self-sustaining community service.
Hardware Requirements for Internet Dial-up Access
Phone Line:
You will connect your PC via your modem to your phone line in order to access the Internet. Because you will be using your phone line for computer usage, it is recommended (but not required) that you get a second line specifically for your Internet connection. (Note: If the phone line that you will be using to connect to the Internet has "Call Waiting", you will probably want to get the option "Cancel Call Waiting" added to your phone line.)
Personal Computer (Windows Machines):
Processor with 486 DX chip or greater
8 or more megabytes of RAM memory
50 or more megabytes of free disck space
Microsoft Windows version 3.1 or higher installed (for Windows users)
CD Rom Drive
Personal Computer (Macintosh Machines):
Must have system 7.5 or higher to use the Internet connection software that we provide.
PC Modem:
A modem connects your PC to the telephone network to dial into the Internet. Modems transmit information at varying speeds. A modem that runs at 14.4 baud or higher is strongly recommended.
PC Monitor:
The monitor or "screen" you look at while operating your PC plays an important role for using the Internet. A PC monitor with at least "VGA" color quality is recommended.
Printer:
While a printer is not necessary for viewing information, it is useful for printing hardcopies. Any PC printer capable of being used with your computer is capable of printing information you access over the Internet. If you are an IBM (or compatible) user, you will want a printer that will work with windows.
