Available Scholarships

2016-2017 Construction & General Laborer’s Union Local 1329 Scholarship is now available to student who attend the Tech Center in Kingsford and to West Iron County Student who participate in a Vocation Class.  You may attend a 2 yr. or 4 yr. program pursuing a degree in construction management or other related degree.  See Mrs. Veirauch or Mr. Barry for an application.

The Marquette Builders Exchange Scholarship is available in Mrs. Veirauch’s office.  This is for seniors who will be attending college, vocational/technical/trade school pursuing a career in the construction industry.  This includes architecture, engineering, boiler-making, painting, brick-laying, etc…

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Career and Technical Scholarship is now available online at application.horatioalger.org.  You must demonstrate financial need, exhibit integrity, and have persevered personal adversity.  You also must be Pell Grant eligible, enrolled in a career or technical program, and be a U.S. citizen.  To learn more go to https://scholars.horatioalger.org/scholarships.  See Mrs. Veirauch if you have questions.

The 2016-2017 Glacial Gardner Master Gardner’s Association Scholarship is now available to a senior who will be pursuing a degree in horticulture, agriculture, forestry, or environmental science. Applications are available in Mrs. Veirauch’s office or with Mr. Barry.  See Mrs. Veirauch if you have any questions. Deadline is May 1st, 2017

The 2016-2017 B.J. Stupak Memorial Scholarship in Memory of Terrance Shea is now available.  Applicants must have a 2.25 GPA or higher with a good ACT/SAT score.  Be able to demonstrate leadership skills at WICHS and/or in the community.  An Essay explaining qualifications and/or the importance of leadership and community service is required.  Two letters of recommendation are also required. Applications are available in Mrs. Veirauch’s office or with Mr. Barry.  See Mrs. Veirauch with any questions.  Deadline for this scholarship is April 5th, 2017

Bewabic State Park is hiring full and part-time people.  Work typically begins in early May and ends late September.  Wages are $8.90.  Many positions available.  Must be 18 yrs or a high school graduate.  Must pass a drug test.  Applications at the park.  Call 906-875-6195 to have one mailed.

The Lyn Carlson Memorial scholarship is now available.  To qualify you must ave a GPA of 3.00, have been accepted to an accredited school, and have overcome a serious health issue.  Other considerations is if you have had a severe illness in the family that could have affected your school work, but didn’t, or you are a student who has overcome adversity or exhibited kindness and compassion for people/animals.  Use the WIC General Application.  You must attach a current transcript and write an essay responding to the question:  “Why should I be the recipient of this scholarship?”  Focus your response on what adversity you have overcome, what hopes and dreams are for the future, and any examples of kind deeds you have shown. This scholarship shall be awarded after the 1st semester of college and a GPA of 2.75 or greater has been achieved. See Mrs. Veirauch if you have questions.

Students planning on doing Dual Enrollment through Bay College next fall and have not applied to Bay as a Dual Enrollment student, you need to go to www.baycollege.edu and apply.  Be sure you apply as a Dual Enrollment student.  See Mrs. Veirauch if you have questions or need help.  Bay will be enrolling for fall classes at the end of March.  You need to be accepted prior to enrolling in classes.

Bay College will begin enrollment for Fall Semester at the end of March.  You will need to get paperwork from Mrs. Veirauch for the 2017-2018 school year for both Bay and West Iron County H. S.

For students interested in taking the ACT April 8th at Kingsford, you need to register for the test no later than March 3rd, 2017.  Go to www.actstudent.org.  Your school code is 232105.  You have a choice to take the writing portion or not take it.  The cost is $42.50 without the writing and $52.50 with the writing.  You must also upload a photo with your registration.  Without it, you will not be able to take the test.  If you receive free or reduced lunch, see Mrs. Veirauch,

The West Iron County Wykon “Spirit” Scholarship is now available in Mrs. Veirauch’s Office or with Mr. Barry.  Applicants must be a graduating senior who has participated in high school sports for at least two years.

Deadline for this scholarship is May 1st, 2017.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Scholarship is now available in Mrs. Veirauch’s Office or with Mr. Barry.  Applicants must be a graduating senior girl who plans to attend a 4 yr. college/university and is in good academic standing.  Criteria is based on the following:  Written essay, Community and School Activities and Honors, and Scholarship and Class Standing.

Deadline for this scholarship is March 20th, 2017

The Horation Alger Association has a scholarship available to high school seniors who plan to enter a Technical or Trade program after high school.  Criteria is financial need, perseverance in overcoming adversity, and enrolled in a tech/trade program.  Go online at https://application2.horatioalger.org/Security or https://scholars.horatioalger.org/scholarship

The Miners State Bank “Grit” Scholarship is now available to student-athletes who have had to overcome adversity, exhibited courage through a difficult situation, or have performed admirably after recovering from a severe injury.  There is a scholarship for one male and one female.  Applications are available in Mrs. Veirauch’s office or with Mr. Barry.  The deadline for this scholarship is April, 21st, 2017.

There is a new scholarship available at http://wearaction.com/scholarship.  It is an essay scholarship that you give feedback on fitness gadgets.  Look at the website and see if you are interested.  Deadline for this scholarship is February 28th, 2017.  See Mrs. Veirauch for more Information.

Seniors, if you enjoy outdoor hobbies like kayaking, camping, exploring, there is a scholarship available at OutdoorHobby.com for $1000.00.  All you need to do is write a 500-1000 word essay about the importance of outdoor hobbies.  Go to the website and check it out.  Winner’s will be picked on December 15, 2017.  See Mrs. Veirauch for more information.

The Abbott and Fenner Business Consultants scholarship is now available at http://www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm.  This is another essay scholarship for graduating seniors.  Deadline for this scholarship is June 12, 2017.

The Phelps Maple Syrup Fest Scholarship is now available in Mrs. Veirauch’s office.  This scholarship is available to a graduating senior who has a GPA of 2.5 or better.  Deadline for this scholarship is April 1st, 2017.

The Nursing Schools Almanac annual Aspiring Nurse Scholarship is available to seniors with a positive track record of academic success, particularly in science and math and a passion for the nursing profession and the overall field of healthcare.  To apply, go to www.nursingschoolalmanac.com and click the banner on the right-hand side of the website’s page.  Here you will find detailed scholarship information and the official application form.

Seniors, you need to go online to www.michigan.gov/missg and fill out the information they are asking for to determine if you qualify for TIP or other State of Michigan monies for college.  If you do qualify for TIP, there are certain things you need to do on this page to keep your eligibilty.

Seniors planning on attending Gogebic Community College in the fall can now apply for their scholarship.  You need to go to https://gogebic.academicworks.com.  One part of the scholarship is an essay.  Gogebic encourages you to take some time with these essay questions and do your best.  To send a transcript along, you can go to Parchment and download a copy and send it as an attachment.  Deadline for the scholarship is March 1st, 2017.  See Mrs. Veirauch if you have questions.

Compare Costs of 2 yr. and 4 yr. Colleges
Compare colleges throughout the United States.  Just go to www.chronicle.com/interactives/tuition-and-fees?  This site lists both public and private school tuition and housing costs at most institutions.  You just select the state, whether it’s a 2 yr. or 4 yr. school, if it’s public or private and you can look at all the different institutions at one time.

The “Cyberbullying Prevention for Teens’ Scholarship is now available.  You can go to www.parentinn.com/scholarship to write an essay of 600 – 1000 words on the topic “why is it important to stop cyberbullying?”  The award is $1000.00 and the Deadline is February 28th, 2017.

Seniors planning on attending Western Michigan University have scholarship opportunities available through the college.  One is the Foundation Scholarships for students with financial need.  The deadline date is February 15, 2017 and you must have already applied to Western.  The other scholarship is the Endowed Scholarship.  Criteria and amounts vary.  The deadline for these scholarships are February 15 2017.  You need to go to the Western Michigan University website and view either Foundation Scholarships or Endowed Scholarships.  See Mrs. Veirauch with questions.

The Facing Acne Scholarship is now available.  You must have a GPA of 3.0 to qualify.  Deadline for this scholarship is March 31, 2017.  Go online to http://www.facingacne.com/scholarships.

2016-2017 American Legion William D. and Jewell Brewer Scholarship available to to Michigan senior students who are a son/daughter, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a veteran planning on attending a MICHIGAN college or university.  Selection is based on the student having a 2.5 GPA or better, have financial need, and have proof of parent/grandparent’s military record.

Deadline to get this scholarship to the American Legion Reino Post is January 9th, 2017.

2016-2017 American Legion Guy Wilson Scholarship available to Michigan senior students who are a son, daughter, or grandchild of a veteran planning to attend any recognized college or university.  Selection is based on the student having a 2.5 GPA or better, have financial need, and have proof of parent or grandparent’s military record.

2016-2017 American Legion Auxiliary Medical Career Scholarship is available to a Michigan senior student who plans to enter the medical field and is a daughter/son, grandchild or great-grandchild of a veteran.  You must have documentation of military record.  This scholarship must be turned into the American Legion Auxilliary Reino Post before March 15th, 2017.

2016-2017 Michigan Education Association (MEA) Scholarship is now available at http://www.mea.org/mea-scholarship.  Criteria for this scholarship are: You must be a dependent of an MEA member, have academic achievement, have done community and school service, participated in extra-curricular activities and are planning on attending a Michigan school.  Deadline for this scholarship is February 23, 2017.  Application is online.

The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship is available at reaganfoundation.org/scholarships.  This scholarship is for students who excel in leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship.  Deadline for this scholarship is January 5th, 2017.  Application is online.

The BigSun Organization scholarship is now available online at http://bigsunathletics.com.  This scholarship is for student athletes.  Deadline for this scholarship is June 19th, 2017.

The AAA Achievement Scholarship is now available at www.axa.com/achievers.  There will be a recipient from every state.  You must apply before December 15th, 2015.  Only the first 10,000 applicants will be accepted.

The Impact Scholarship for Business and Economics at Michigan Tech is now available and is worth up to $7000.00 or full tuition per year.  If you are looking at going into Business, Michigan Tech has one of the best programs in the Midwest.  For more information on the scholarship visit www.mtu.edu/impactscholarship and follow the steps.  Deadlines to apply is December 15th.  You must apply to MTU prior to applying for this scholarship.  See Mrs. Veirauch for more information.

The Medallion Scholarship through Western Michigan University is now available.
You must have a 3.7 GPA or better, a 26+ on the ACT or a 1240+ on the SAT.  You must apply to Western prior to applying for this scholarship.  The amount of this award is $15,000.00 per year for 4 years.  There are several other scholarships available if you are not one of the 20 selected for the Medallion.  See Mrs. Veirauch if you have any questions.

The Leader Advancement Scholarship at Central Michigan Univ. is now available.
You must have a  3.0 GPA or better, have been accepted to CMU and demonstrate qualities such as integrity, self-confidence, and a desire to lead.  You must apply online at www.cmich.edu.  See Mrs. Veirauch if you have questions.

The B. Davis Scholarship is now available.
Deadline for this scholarship is May 22, 2017 and the amount is $1000.00.

The Americorp National & Community Service program will be accepting applications now and in the spring for young men and women ages 18 – 24 who have a passion for service, want to make a difference, and get the experience of a lifetime.  Americorp is a full-time, 10 month, residential, national service program that serves projects that address critical needs related to natural resources/disasters, environmental stewardship, conservation, etc…  It also works with FEMA to give young adults professional skills in emergency management on disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.  You a paid a full-time wage, given housing, and a living stipend.  You can also earn money for college or to pay off student dept.  Email ncccnorthcentral@cns.gov for more information.
